Chapter Fifteen
“If you don’t quit doing this, my husband is going to kick your ass,” Lindy said.
David blinked at her, barely visible over the mug of coffee hovering in front of his face. His head ached and his eyes were sticky, and he didn’t remember going to Lindy’s house last night. Or crashing on her sofa. “Time is it?” he asked.
“Around eight. What did you do this time?”
“Guh.”
“That bad?” She put the coffee down. “Owen?”
“Yeah.”
“You were mumbling something about him, an ordered hit and a bush. Do I even want to know?”
David tried to wet his tongue, but his mouth was dry. He must have stopped off for a bottle of something on his way to Lindy’s, because she didn’t keep anything stronger than wine around.
“Okay, let’s try something easier. How’d you hurt your back?”
“Assholes at the movies pushed me into a bush.”
“Ouch. Owen clean it up?”
“Tried to. Shit.” He sat up too fast, and his head spun around in dizzying circles. His back screamed around the cut.
“Calm down, I put a towel under you so you didn’t stain the sofa.”
How does she always know?
“Did you guys have another fight?” Lindy asked.
“Not quite.”
“Then what?”
“I walked out.”
Her face twisted into an epic frown. “Um, why? What did he say to you?”
“Owen killed two men.”
“He did what?”
“In his old life, before he went into witness protection. He killed two men in cold blood, on orders from his boss.”
“Fuck.” Lindy moved from the edge of the couch to perch on the wooden coffee table. She was beyond stunned. “Owen did?”
“I guess you could say the guy he used to be killed them, but that’s semantics, right? Different name, different decade, same damned person.”
“And he confessed this to you last night? How come?”
To prove he’s a better man than I am.
“He wanted me to know that he trusted me with the worst of his secrets. He didn’t want anything between us.”
Lindy’s gentle smile made him feel like a complete douche. “He was trying to get you to talk to him, wasn’t he?”
David nodded. All Owen asked for was honesty. Owen had delivered that in spades in the ten days since he came barreling back into David’s life. David couldn’t claim the same courtesy. He was too fucking ashamed of his secrets to heap them onto someone as amazing and kind as Owen Hart.
Amazing and kind for a murderer.
“I don’t have to ask how you feel about Owen’s confession,” Lindy said. “It’s all over your face, babe. But do you honestly think he’d ever physically hurt you? Or anyone else ever again, for that matter?”
“No.” David didn’t hesitate in his answer. Owen was a gentle soul, haunted by his violent past. So what would he think about David bringing home tricks who were willing to beat him simply to feel something? To seek out pain in order to clear the static in his head?
You didn’t last night. You went to Lindy.
True enough. He’d already been in pain—both physical and emotional—when he left Owen’s apartment. Somehow
